seattle sounders x la galaxy

On Monday night at Lumen Field, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season, and the LA Galaxy hung on for a 1-1 tie against Seattle Sounders FC, gaining a crucial away point in their postseason push. Chicharito's backheel finish in the 19th minute after Nick DePuy flicked on Sebastian Lletget's corner kick propelled the Galaxy to sixth place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of Vancouver Whitecaps FC on total victories.

Although Vancouver, Real Salt Lake, and LAFC all have a game in hand, the Galaxy are still in charge of their own destiny. Only one team can pass LAFC, when Vancouver and LAFC play each other on Tuesday. If the Galaxy beat the Loons at home on Decision Day, they will pass Minnesota United FC and finish above the West playoff line. Shortly after halftime, Raul Ruidiaz scored his 17th goal of the season with a Panenka from the penalty spot for the Sounders. With the goal, Seattle regained sole ownership of first place in the Western Conference, a point ahead of Sporting Kansas City, who have a game in hand.

The Sounders had the stronger late scoring opportunities. Jonathan Bond grabbed just enough of Xavier Arreaga's thunderous header to send it against the crossbar during second-half stoppage time, while Cristian Roldan hit the near post with a volley.
