USWNT x NEW ZEALAND

In the second match of the SheBelieves Cup, the United States Women's National Team thrashed New Zealand 5-0 at Dignity Health Sports Park on Sunday. Forwards Ashley Hatch and Mallory Pugh put on a ferocious attacking display to secure the team's first win of the season. In the fifth minute, forward Sophia Smith sent a cross into the box from the left flank, which New Zealand defender Mikayla Moore accidentally diverted into the visitors' net as she sought to clear it. A ball from defender Sofia Huerta was deflected off Moore as American forward Margaret Purce darted in front of her and bounced into the New Zealand goal for the second own goal of the night just 82 seconds later.

Purce raced New Zealand captain Ali Riley into the penalty area on the right side and crossed on the ground to make it 3-0 in the 36th minute as the Americans continued to pour on the pressure. As Moore attempted to clear the ball, it rebounded off her and into the net once more. Hatch scored in the 51st minute, burying a close-range header off a cross from Huerta from the right flank, and the US team carried the momentum into the second half. Hatch had scored in both of the USWNT's games against Australia in November, making it her third goal in as many games.

After attacker Trinity Rodman was forced off with an injury in the final 10 minutes of the contest in stoppage time, the USA defended valiantly to achieve their second consecutive shutout of the tournament and 16th consecutive clean sheet on home soil. The game's fifth and final goal came in the third minute of stoppage time when Hatch nodded on a long pass to Pugh, who raced in on goal for the game's last goal.
