This match was the inaugural match for the American Family Insurance Cup. This new partnership Atlanta has with American Family Insurance will see them face top foreign teams at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. C.F. Pachuca from the Mexican soccer league Liga MX came to town for the opportunity to win the cup.
Atlanta started the game off with a goal in the 5th minute by Josef Martinez off of a blocked shot by Pachuca's goalkeeper that was redirected to him. Three minutes later, Martinez was the one that provided an assist that led to Atlanta's second goal. That goal was by Luiz Araújo. Gustavo Cabral of C.F. Pachuca cut them down to make it 2-1. He scored off of a set piece in the 22nd minute. Three minutes later, the score was tied 2-2 thanks to a goal by Aviles Hurtado. Atlanta's coach, Gonzalo Pineda, opted to keep his starters in and therefore came out with a whole new lineup for the second half. This was done because Atlanta resumes play on Sunday. Atlanta's Dom Dwyer came away with a goal in the 56th minute to give Atlanta a 3-2 lead.
