Seattle Sounders x San Diego Loyal

Fredy Montero, Ethan Dobbelaere, Paul Rothrock, and Reed Baker-Whiting scored for the Seattle Sounders as they beat San Diego Loyal 5-4 on Wednesday night at Starfire Sports Stadium in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.

In the 15th minute, a clash in the eighteen-yard box resulted in a goal for the Sounders off a one-time finish from Montero. In the 26th minute, Montero contributed further to Seattle's offensive by delivering a through ball to Léo Chu on the left side of the field, who then crossed the ball over the goalkeeper's grasp and onto the feet of Dobbelaere, who slammed the back post to double Seattle's advantage.

After failing to score in the first half, San Diego Loyal finally found the back of the net in the second half thanks to a penalty kick they were awarded for a handball inside the area in the 53rd minute. In the 55th minute, Rothrock made a diagonal move down the left side of the field and scored another goal for the Sounders. The local Seattleite dribbled past his opponent and slammed a shot into the near post, bringing the score to 3-1. Joe Corona scored a second goal for San Diego on a free kick outside the area in the 73rd minute. The California squad tied the game with a minute remaining in regulation thanks to a long-range shot from Kyle Adams, forcing overtime. In the 101st minute, Baker-Whiting scored a game-winning goal for the Sounders by blasting a long-distance shot into the upper ninety. However, in the 115th minute, Jackson Kasanzu's header from a corner kick gave San Diego yet another equalizer.

Seattle would advance to the next round of the U.S. Open Cup thanks to a game-winning goal scored by Montero as the clock wound down. He would calmly convert a penalty kick to send Seattle through to the next round.
