Portland Thorns x Gotham FC

NJ/NY Gotham FC began their season with a significant 1-0 victory over the Portland Thorns at Providence Park. The match was characterized by a fast-paced start, with both teams creating scoring opportunities early on. Gotham FC's Esther, a standout from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, showcased her attacking prowess with an early shot that narrowly missed the target.

Portland had their chances as well, but a well-organized Gotham FC defense, led by Tierna Davidson and Sam Hiatt, thwarted their attempts. Goalkeeper Cassie Miller made a crucial save in the 10th minute to keep the scores level. Meanwhile, Gotham FC continued to press forward, with Esther attempting a spectacular bicycle kick in the 14th minute.

The breakthrough came in the 72nd minute when Delanie Sheehan's precise pass found Bruninha on the right flank, who then set up Yazmeen Ryan for a low cross into the box. Esther was on hand to finish calmly and give Gotham FC the lead. This goal marked Esther's second consecutive game-winner for the club, following her decisive goal in the previous NWSL Championship.

As the match approached its conclusion, Miller once again demonstrated her quality with another crucial save in the 75th minute, ensuring Gotham FC secured all three points with a solid defensive performance. The victory not only kickstarted Gotham FC's season on a positive note but also showcased their resilience and determination to compete at the highest level of women's soccer.
