Aliyu Strike Ends Portland’s Unbeaten Run
In a tense and hard-fought match at Shell Energy Stadium, the Houston Dynamo secured their first win of the 2024 MLS season with a 1–0 victory over the Portland Timbers on March 16, 2024. Portland came into the game undefeated and at the top of the Western Conference, while Houston was eager to reverse their slow start to the season.
The decisive moment came late in the first half. In the 43rd minute, Dynamo forward Ibrahim Aliyu received a perfectly timed pass and calmly slotted the ball past the Portland goalkeeper. That strike would ultimately prove to be the match-winner, giving Houston a crucial lead heading into halftime.
Portland pressed hard throughout the second half, dominating possession and outshooting Houston 18 to 9. Despite the pressure, the Dynamo’s defense held strong. Goalkeeper Steve Clark made several key saves, including a critical stop in stoppage time, ensuring Houston kept a clean sheet and secured the three points.
This victory was a major milestone for Houston, ending Portland’s unbeaten run and giving the team confidence as they look to build momentum for the rest of the season. The match highlighted Houston’s resilience and determination, while Portland was left to reflect on missed chances and opportunities that slipped away.
