Toronto FC x Atlanta United
Toronto FC and Atlanta United played out a dramatic 1-1 draw at BMO Field on July 12, 2025, in a match that ended in heartbreak for the home side and relief for the visitors. Toronto looked set to take all three points after a second-half goal from Deybi Flores, but a 100th-minute penalty from Emmanuel Latte Lath salvaged a point for Atlanta in stunning fashion.
The first half was tight and tense, with both sides struggling to find a rhythm. Atlanta looked the more comfortable in possession, but Toronto's defense held strong and limited clear-cut chances. The game came to life in the second half when Toronto finally made their pressure count. Just three minutes after the restart, Matty Longstaff delivered a precise corner kick that found Flores rising above the defense. The midfielder powered his header into the net, giving Toronto a 1-0 lead and sparking celebrations around the stadium.
Toronto grew into the game after the goal and looked more confident in possession. Atlanta, however, refused to back down. Despite being behind, they kept pushing forward, and as the clock ticked past the 90-minute mark, they found one final lifeline.
In the tenth minute of stoppage time, substitute Luke Brennan drove into the Toronto box and went down under contact from Charlie Sharp. The referee initially allowed play to continue, but after a VAR review, a penalty was awarded. Latte Lath, who had not scored since March, stepped up under massive pressure. Sean Johnson guessed right and got a hand to it, but the ball squirmed over the line, silencing the crowd and rescuing a point for Atlanta.
For Toronto, the draw felt like a loss. They had done enough to win but once again failed to close out the game. For Atlanta, it was a much-needed boost after a rough run of form, and they’ll take encouragement from the resilience they showed. With both teams languishing near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, the result doesn’t do much to change the standings, but it may shift momentum as the season grinds on.
