Portland Timbers x LA Galaxy
Portland scored early, went down a man seven minutes later, and spent the next seventy-plus minutes hanging on for dear life against LA Galaxy at Providence Park. One-one final. The Timbers are 1-3-1 through five games, the Galaxy sit at 1-2-2, and both teams walked away from this one feeling like they should've gotten more.
Kristoffer Velde scored in the 13th minute to give Portland a 1-0 lead. His second goal in back-to-back games, first Timber with multiple goals this season. Antony Alves Santos played a pass into the left side of the penalty area, Velde placed a left-footer into the bottom right corner. Everything going according to plan. Providence Park buzzing. Early lead at home against a Galaxy team that's been struggling.
Then Kamal Miller picked up a red card in the 20th minute for a foul on João Klauss. Down to ten men. Seventy minutes left to play. The kind of moment that changes everything.
LA smelled blood. Klauss equalized in the 30th minute after Emiro Garcés won possession deep in the Portland half, Gabriel Pec slipped a ball into the box for Marco Reus, who provided a back-heel layoff to Klauss. Klauss finished from close range, his sixth goal of the season. Fifth goal in five games for the striker who's been carrying the Galaxy while Riqui Puig's out injured for a second straight season. One-one. All the momentum with LA. Portland scrambling to survive.
James Pantemis made six saves total, including four in the first half, keeping Portland in it when the Galaxy could've blown it open. The kind of performance that earns you a point when you absolutely don't deserve one. Every shot coming at him. Every Galaxy attack looking dangerous. Ten men defending for their lives.
JT Marcinkowski made his first league start of the season for LA, stopped two shots, but couldn't find the winner against a Portland team playing with one less player for most of the match. Marco Reus picked up an assist, has a goal contribution in back-to-back league games now. Gabriel Pec involved in the buildup. All the pieces clicking except the final result.
This was LA's fifth match in a demanding 16-day stretch before heading into the international break, and you could feel the fatigue. They dominated possession, created chances, had the man advantage for seventy minutes, and still couldn't break through. One point instead of three. The Galaxy lead the all-time series 14-12-11, but are just 5-10-11 in Portland. Providence Park continues to be a house of horrors.
Portland walked away feeling like they stole a point. Galaxy walked away frustrated they didn't take all three. The Timbers head to Vancouver on April 4 for a Cascadia Cup match after the international break. LA hosts Minnesota the same day with a special Landon Donovan celebration planned.
One-one. Ten men holding on. A point earned through grit and desperation and a goalkeeper who wouldn't break. The kind of result that feels like a win when you're down a man but feels like two points dropped when you had the advantage for seventy minutes. Both teams stuck in the middle of the pack. Both teams needing more. Both teams walking away with one point and a bunch of what-ifs.
