The Seattle Sounders extended their lead atop the Western Conference with a 1-0 win over Minnesota United FC at Lumen Field on Saturday afternoon. Tyler Miller, who made four saves for the Loons in a solid effort, was only beaten by a shot from Seattle midfielder Joao Paulo in the 22nd minute. The Brazilian's goal was his second of the season, and it ended the Sounders' four-game home losing run. Nicolas Benezet fed him the ball above the box, and he fired first-time into the bottom left corner.

Despite promising offensive moments, Minnesota failed to finish anything without top goalscorer Robin Lod and leading assist provider Emanuel Reynoso, who were both injured. However, Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei returned to the net for the home team, making his first appearance since May 12 following his own extended injury layoff.

Although Seattle failed to score an insurance goal in the final 45 minutes, it was a near-perfect effort by the Western Conference leaders in limiting the Loons' opportunities. Minnesota's greatest chance came in the 60th minute when they came close to equalizing. Adrien Hunou attempted a shot from the edge of the box, but his effort flew inches past the crossbar and into the seats.

With a crucial three points at home, the Sounders kept their hold on first place in the Western Conference. The Loons might drop to 7th in the West depending on tonight's outcomes, but they will almost certainly stay above the playoff line. That may not be the case as the week progresses, as Minnesota will face two more of the West's top-five teams over the following seven days.
