portland thorns x san diego wave fc

Despite a second-half comeback by San Diego Wave FC, Sophia Smith and Hina Sugita's goals in the first half were enough to give the Portland Thorns a 3-2 victory. In the first half, the Thorns completely overpowered San Diego. Sophia Smith put the game away in the fourth minute, and Hina Sugita made it 2-0 in the 21st minute with her maiden NWSL goal. The Wave were unable to get much going offensively, and Smith and Morgan Weaver posed a constant threat to the San Diego defense. After another Thorns' spell of pressure engineered by Smith and Sinclair, Hina Sugita capitalized once more. The Thorns led 3-0 at the break.

San Diego started the second half considerably better. They quickly responded with a goal from Isabella Briede. To make it 3-2, Turnbow assisted fellow replacement Taylor Kornieck from a corner kick. In the second half, the Wave continued to apply pressure, as Portland battled to keep possession. San Diego's effort at a three-goal comeback was thwarted by Portland, and the game concluded 3-2.
