portland timbers x Philadelphia union

The Philadelphia Union reclaimed the first position in the Eastern Conference with a 2-0 win against the Portland Timbers at Providence Park on Sunday night. Alejandro Bedoya's flicked header was intercepted by Daniel Gazdag. The Hungarian midfielder scored his ninth goal with an incredible overhead kick. Only three minutes after halftime, the visitors doubled their lead. Sergio Santos scored his first goal of the season, knocking home a pinpoint cross from fullback Kai Wagner and giving Aljaz Ivacic little chance. For the Timbers, Sebastian Blanco seemed to have pulled one back, but a lengthy Video Review determined that Santiago Moreno was offside in the build-up. Portland didn't take their first shots on goal until the last five minutes, and Andre Blake saved both of them admirably to preserve the clean sheet.

Portland is having problems. After just winning twice at home this season, they're in 20th position in the Supporters' Shield standings. They score a lot of goals, but they also concede a lot. The Union, on the other hand, is moving in the other way. They've only lost once all season, have let up a league-high nine goals, and have reclaimed first place in the Eastern Conference.
