OL reign x portland thorns

The OL Reign and the Portland Thorns met for the second time on Sunday in their historic Cascadia Rivalry. Portland would go up 1-0 due to an early mistake by Phoebe McClernon. She was involved in a big scramble in front of her net where nobody could get control of the ball. Phoebe then slipped as she was running towards the ball and accidentally deflected the ball into her own net. Only one minute later, Olivia Athens, who would make her first professional start, tied the game up for OL Reign. Athens was running toward the ball when it bounced off a Portland player as she attempted to kick it. She then received the ball back and ran toward the goal before shooting it and scoring. In the 19th minute, OL Reign made a good challenge in front of the Portland goal. There were bodies flying as OL Reign attempted to go ahead. The one player who had the best chance to score was Bethany Balcer, who was receiving a pass from Lauren Barnes. Lauren headed the ball toward her, but when Bethany was in a position to go for the header, Bixby came out of the box to punch the ball out of the box to safety.

The pressure was applied to OL Reign by Portland after the break. Morgan Weaver attempted a shot from the right side of the field that would’ve put Portland up 2-1 but Phallon Tullis-Joyce was in the right position to save the attempt on goal. In the 60th minute, Klingenberg made a perfect cross to Hina Sugita, who was all alone at the back post for an easy header to put away. OL Reign almost put a stop to Portland's pressure and hopefully gained some momentum when Jessica Fishlock made an attempt at an amazing header to score the equalizer, but Bella Bixby reached to the ball and knocked it out of play. OL Reign finally got the equalizer in the 81st minute when Veronica Latsko crossed the ball to Bethany Balcer for a header that went over Bella Bixby for the goal. Portland would try to score again, but they couldn't get past the OL Reign defense and their goalkeeper, Tullis-Joyce. The game ended with a 2-2 draw, with both teams walking away with a point.
