Seattle Sounders x Colorado Rapids
On a thrilling night at Lumen Field on July 16 2025 the Seattle Sounders looked to be cruising to a comfortable win against the Colorado Rapids after racing out to a commanding three goal lead. Obed Vargas opened the scoring early in the 16th minute and then Albert Rusnak doubled the advantage just before halftime. Rusnak struck again early in the second half putting Seattle up three nothing and seemingly in full control of the match.
But Colorado was not ready to roll over. In the 50th minute Djordje Mihailovic converted a penalty after a foul on the Rapids. Just minutes later Cole Bassett stepped up and scored another penalty following a handball by the Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Thomas. Suddenly the momentum swung and the Rapids were back in the game.
The comeback was completed in the 75th minute when substitute Darren Yapi found the net to level the score at three all. This remarkable rally marked the first time in MLS history that a team had come back from three goals down to earn a draw at Lumen Field.
Despite the heartbreak of giving up such a big lead Seattle managed to extend their unbeaten run to four matches and remain fifth in the Western Conference. The Rapids also gained a valuable point and stayed seventh as the season heats up.
It was a rollercoaster of emotions for the fans with Seattle dominating early but Colorado showing incredible grit and resilience to snatch a point late in a wild and unforgettable game.
