LA Galaxy x san Jose earthquakes

In a second-half thriller between the LA Galaxy and the San Jose Earthquakes at Dignity Health Sports Park on Friday evening, the visitors won 2-1 to kick off Heineken Rivalry Week.

The Earthquakes have now won three of their last six games, extending their undefeated streak to ten games. The Galaxy have lost two straight games at home in a four-day stretch, which may knock them out of the top three positions in the Western Conference by the end of Week 21.

Jonathan Bond's first-half heroics stole the show early on, with the Galaxy goalkeeper making two impeccably timed saves to deny Jeremy Ebobisse just before halftime to preserve the game 0-0. Bond's incredible play continued in the second half, with another spectacular double-save on Ebobisse and then San Jose defender Tanner Beason. Then, in the 52nd minute, Ebobisse's header gave the team the lead for the first time since being purchased in a deal with the Portland Timbers. After some deft dribbling around the endline, Javier "Chofis" Lopez scored the game-winner in the 71st minute. After Lopez danced into the area, his cross ricocheted beyond Bond, and Galaxy left defender Niko Hamalainen was to blame for the resulting own goal.

In the 65th minute, Victor Vazquez equalized for the Galaxy, bringing the score to 1-1. After eluding San Jose defenders at the near post and scrambling past goalie JT Marcinkowski, the second-half replacement scored an Olimpico direct from the corner flag.

San Jose avoided being swept by the Galaxy in the Cali Clasico series this season by winning the third meeting between the rivals. They go into playoff contention in the Western Conference, occupying the No. 7 place, with three points. The Galaxy have now lost two games in a row for the first time this season, and both losses have come at home, including Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Colorado. This week did not go as Greg Vanney's team planned.
