portland thorns x olympique lyonnais

The Portland Thorns won the 2021 Women's International Champions Cup title on Saturday night, defeating French club Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 at Providence Park. Forward Morgan Weaver scored the game-winning goal with just three minutes left in regulation.

Portland head coach Mark Parsons framed the battle between the two teams as one between heavyweights in his pre-game news conference. And tonight's WICC championship bout lived up to the hype. Both clubs had their chances, their chances to have an impact on the game. The Thorns eventually broke through late after pounding on the door all evening.

Weaver came on as a second-half substitute in the 82nd minute and scored the game-winning goal five minutes later with a spectacular shot that drifted teasingly down the goal line before crossing over just before the ball struck the far left post. The victory gave the club its first WICC title, and it extends the club's winning streak to three competitions in a row: the 2020 NWSL Fall Series, the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup, and now the WICC title.

Portland has dominated the defensive end of the field throughout the NWSL season, leading the league in shutouts and goals allowed. This run of form continued in the WICC final, when Lyon, a seven-time UEFA Champions League winner, was held scoreless. Lyon was limited to six shots on goal by the Thorns defense, with goalkeeper Bella Bixby making six saves for another clean sheet.

In the WICC's third-place match, FC Barcelona defeated the Houston Dash 3-2 in the opening match of the doubleheader on Saturday at Providence Park.
