Toronto FC x NYCFC
New York City FC finally broke their road curse in thrilling fashion on Saturday, April 26, edging out Toronto FC 1-0 at BMO Field for their first away win of the 2025 season.
The breakthrough came in the 64th minute when Alonso Martínez, who had been a constant threat all game, drew a penalty and coolly slotted it home, his debut goal for NYCFC. That clutch finish proved to be the difference in a hard-fought battle.
Both teams started aggressively, trading chances early. Toronto's Charlie Sharp narrowly missed with a header just minutes in, while Keaton Parks responded in kind for NYCFC soon after. Martínez nearly opened the scoring in the 17th minute, forcing a sharp save from former NYCFC keeper Sean Johnson.
Despite a few tense moments, NYCFC’s defense held strong, with goalkeeper Matt Freese and his back line locking things down to preserve the clean sheet. With this result, NYCFC climbed to 4-4-2 on the season, while Toronto's struggles continued, falling to 1-5-4.
The win wasn’t just three points, it was a statement. NYCFC is finding its rhythm, and with Martínez making his mark, the season’s momentum might just be shifting.
